Lee A Tregurtha – One of the favorite classics on the Great Lakes. Built in 1942 as a tanker by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Sparrows Point, MD. as the civilian tanker SAMOSET and was drafted into US Navy service as the fleet oiler/tanker USS CHIWAWA (AO-68) She still has her service ribbons displayed on her pilot house. Converted from a US Navy Oiler to a Great Lakes bulk carrier in 1961, lengthened 96’ in 1976 and converted to a self-unloader in 1978 at American Shipbuilding Co., Lorain, OH. Repowered in 2006. She is now 826’ in length, 75’ in beam with a capacity of 29,360 tons. She’s powered by twin 6-cylinder Rolls-Royce Bergen B32:40L6P Diesels providing 8,160 bhp turning a single changeable pitch propeller.
