I glaze in the first layer of color on the red sash on my Cherubim painting. When either glazing dark or bright colors, you approach the glaze with the mindset that it may take several applications to get the color you want. Why not just direct paint then, you ask? If you glaze, even multiple times, you preserve that luminosity from the underpainting which is why you are choosing this technique in the first place.
