Orcas are currently classified as a singular, global species, which are further divided into roughly a dozen recognized Ecotypes, which themselves contain certain subgroups within each ecotype.

A new paper looked at the differences between two ecotypes in the North Pacific; the Transient and Resident ecotypes, and determined that both should be reclassified as their own distinct species of killer whale. Lets talk about it
