Avatar selection and you!

How am I supposed to pick a character? All these tier lists to sift through, all of these different moves and looks and costumes? Sheesh! I'm just trying to land a combo here!

Avatar selection is a concept that every player engages with differently. There's no exact science to figuring out who you're going to like. Sometimes it's just impulse. Think back to your first Pokemon starter, or what your favorite weapon type is - you chose those things for some kind of reason, and maybe it's worth exploring why!

I have a long, casual history with fighting games. I mostly watched from the sidelines, but Soulcalibur was my favorite. I think people who appreciate the genre can recognize that fighting games are both the sum of their aesthetic and mechanical triumphs, which is why it's frustrating to talk about them on YouTube. It's really easy to tank videos because most people don't play them - they're a niche kind of experience. Fighting games have the capacity to endear players directly with character at the forefront, but they're difficult enough to make (with extensive, complex animation work etc.) that story tends to fall by the wayside, so even if they contain Quality Story - whatever that means - they don't present as quality, which happens to matter. Not everyone can appreciate the finer details of a thing, but if they can latch onto aesthetics, they've got a better chance to really dive in. Fighting games contain multitudes - many facets of our potential selves represented in character avatars. Think of every character like a new level in a video game - a new potentiality, only you step directly into that world like skin. That's the compelling thing about the genre - you can become many complete people, at least as far as the medium can allow for, and understand yourself better through these alterate selves. This is not a review of Soulcalibur 2, or a Street Fighter 4 retrospective, or a Street Fighter 6 combo video. It's just a little reflection.
