The Kunming dialect is a variant of Southwestern Mandarin Chinese, characterized by its simple phonemes, refined vocabulary, and clear grammar. Its origins are intertwined with the migration of Han Chinese to Yunnan. The dialect underwent significant changes in the 1940s due to the influx of refugees from northern China and the Jiangnan region following the Second Sino-Japanese War. This influx reshaped the politics, economy, and culture of Kunming, leading to the emergence of the "new" Kunming dialect. Contrasts exist between the tones, pronunciation, and vocabulary of Northern Mandarin and the Kunming dialect. Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan province, China. Other famous attractions include Stone Forest and Yunnan's Ethnic Village.
