COMPAS Colloquium: Religion, Post-Liberalism, and Democracy

 Published On Jan 25, 2024

In the twenty-first century, nations as diverse as Russia, India, Poland, and Turkey have seen a revival of religious politics, and many religious movements in other countries have proved similarly resilient. A new generation of political theologians passionately reformulate ancient religious doctrines to revolutionize modern political life. They insist that states recognize the true religion, and they reject modern liberal ideals of universal religious freedom and church-state separation.

Such efforts are part of a broader conservative, "post-liberalism" intellectual movement. In the face of these challenges, can the liberal tradition and democratic deliberation still be defended? What is the appropriate role of religion in the public life of a liberal democracy?

This event featured Kevin Vallier (Bowling Green State University) and Michael A. Neblo (OSU) in a panel discussion with CEHV's Kathryn Joyce (OSU). The colloquium was part of the 2023-24 COMPAS Program COMPAS Directions: A Decade of Ethical Exploration.
