Nant Syddion is a remote mountain bothy situated in mid Wales. It has no electricity, no gas and no water, it's simply an off grid shelter in a remote location surrounded by the Cambrian mountains and forest.
We hiked in with everything we needed in our rucksacks, including a few beers. It's around a 1.5 mile hike in so accessible for most people.
This bothy is apparently haunted, a tragic story of 7 members of a family died, leaving only the mother to live on. Reportes say they've felt a motherly presence and there are inscriptions on a local tree in memory of the deceased, along with the name Margaret written in candle wax on the bothy wall.
Despite the other occupants we enjoyed a night in front of the fire, Jack the Labrador had acres of land to explore off lead and the weather, apart from the strong winds was perfect.
It's a real mental retreat to visit somewhere like here, it makes you appreciate what you have and what other treats are out there to explore.
This was also the perfect opportunity to try out some new kit... Fjallraven Keb 52 rucksack, sea to summit ether light xt extreme mat and Flextail tint pump x2. All performed excellently!
We cooked our breakfast sausages on the Trangia 27 spirit stove along with a coffee or two.
Bothies are maintained by the mountain bothy association and they're volunteers so, whilst this is a free of charge destination, please treat it like your own property. Leave it at least as good as you found it as they're not permanently monitored so they rely on good folk to tidy up before and after themselves, along with taking your own litter home with you.
There are 2 or 3 small parking spaces with an honesty box of £2 per day to park at Gwersylla Tymawr campsite which is the closest location to walk from.
