Aloe Blacc has written and performed the anthem “I Count On Me”, inspired by the true friendship between Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) as depicted in Universal Pictures, Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures’ GREEN BOOK. Watch the music video here.

“Throughout history, there have been many unsung heroes,” said Blacc in regards to the inspiration behind the song. “I didn’t know about Dr. Don Shirley, a classically trained African-American pianist, touring during the civil rights movement. Dr. Shirley was such a unique individual at such a difficult time in the history of America; wanting to tour across the country to perform specifically for white audiences in the South shows a lot of determination.

A hero like Dr. Don Shirley wouldn’t have been recognized as during his time. I think it’s time now for us to stand up and applaud his tenacity and his genius. His story inspired my new song ‘I Count On Me’ which is all about focusing on your goals and shutting out the naysayers who tell you your dreams are not possible.”

Lyrics

If there's one thing that I'm sure about
It's that I got a lot to learn
If there's another thing that I'm sure about
It's that I'm sick of sitting waiting my turn

I've been knocked around
Pushed to the ground
People try to hold me down
But here's a little thing that I'm sure about
I'm gone be standing firm when I get back up again

I count on me
When everybody's counting me out
I count on me
When the world is full of doubt

Through the storm, through the pain
Through the fire, through the rain
I count on me
And that's the way it's gonna be

When I look around, all that I can see
Is people trying to shift the blame
When I look around, yeah it's clear to me
Something 'bout me ain't the same

Some people are cold selling their soul
I don't wanna be that way
Take a look around, take a look at me
I ain't never gonna change
'Cause I know what I believe

I count on me
When everybody's counting me out
I count on me
When the world is full of doubt

Through the storm, through the pain
Through the fire, through the rain
I count on me
And that's the way it's gonna be

Now I ain't saying I can't rely on no one else
'Cause there are days when I'm trying to find a little help
My friends got good intentions and though they mean me well
Don't nobody know me like I know I know myself

I count on me
When everybody's counting me out
I count on me
When the world is full of doubt

Through the storm, through the pain
Through the fire, through the rain
I count on me
And that's the way it's gotta be

I count on me
When there's no one to turn to and nowhere to go
I count on me
When I'm tryin' to find a helping hand, they have me know

I count on me
Through the fire, through the rain, through the storm
I count on me
That's the way it's gonna be
