Disney vs. Studio Ghibli. Shots fired.

In this video essay, I present an analysis and contrast of Disney’s 1953 animated version of Peter Pan and Hayao Miyazaki’s classic anime My Neighbor Totoro. I see a lot of similarities between these two films, and I focus my analysis on these questions:
- What about childhood is worth retaining or rediscovering in adulthood?
- What does it mean to grow up?

I ultimately conclude that My Neighbor Totoro presents a much more thoughtful look at the growing up process — played out through its themes (fear, death), symbols (the house, seeds), and complex characters.
