However, the absence of social consciousness in the early Destiny Child's catalog as well as Beyonce's early solo work can be attributed to timing.

Mathew Knowles pointed out how Marvin Gaye didn't put out "What's Going On" until later in his career and Beyonce has shown a similar trajectory in terms of tackling those issues. He conceded, however, that Solange is the one who takes on those socially pressing topics more than her older sister.
