Sloths are prey for jaguars and harpy eagles. But being slow helps them survive!
Sloths exclusively feed on green leaves that do not have much energy content. They’ve evolved several strategies to deal with low energy, which also protect them from predators:
First, they move so slowly that algae grows on their fur and helps them better camouflage.
Second, they barely expose themselves. Going down the canopy is the most dangerous thing that exposes them to predators. Because they have a sophisticated digestion system to extract as much energy from their food as possible, it takes a long time for them to digest. So, they only need to descend from trees once per week for a bathroom break.
