Big is 100 days old; Lil is 99 days old!
5 AM Very quiet and dark. Video infra-red/night vision running.
5:08 AM Both parents vocalize. Big starts whining.
One fledgling in the attic; Hannah on the babysitting branch; Mr. Majestic at the top of the AET, I don’t see Big yet but I hear her coming from the AET.
5:25 AM Majestic leaves his AET roost landing on the Family Tree (aka Hannah’s tree).
5:29 AM Hannah begins chiming, MrM joins in.
5:38 AM Hannah departs for the lake. Lil is flapping hard in the attic.
5:44 AM Lil departs the attic flying over dad on the family tree and behind the nest. I notice Big is also flying. They pass right by each other between the ONT and the nest. WOWsers. Both approach the family tree at the same exact moment like synchronized twins, with Big sticking to her landing and Lil not. He drops down trying to grab at branches on his way down but keeps missing. At the last moment, he turns into a flight just above the ground landing on the sloped hill across from the family tree (aka Hannah's tree). After reviewing my video footage, it looked like a soft landing, although at the time I wasn't sure. He is in my view.
When Lil moved out of my view, I hoofed my way up the road to the overlook to see if I could spot Lil from there.
6:27 AM The second time I hoofed up to the lookout, Big took flight from the family tree flying directly over her grounded sibling, circling around past the Santa tree returning to the family tree.
6:29 AM MrM flies to the Lakeside tree.
6:40 AM Lil departs from the top of the hill where he was grounded flying low towards the nesting tree. Big took flight seconds later and both were flying. Lil landed on the Lakeside tree close to the nest tree main trunk in the thick leaves. Big followed landing on the Lakeside perch next to dad. Dad belts out vocals. "Good job kids".
6:43 AM Big makes a leap getting closer to dad. He immediately departs flying in front of the nest free landing on Hannah's tree.
6:50 AM Big is a hoot playing on the Lakeside branch pulling on loose pieces of bark. Lil is nearby hidden from view.
6:53 AM Big jumped up; as she landed on a branch it gave way sending her into flight.
She flew out towards the north then circled around and flew south passing the Lakeside tree. That’s the last I saw her this morning.
7:01 AM Dad flies to Lakeside tree.
8:15 AM Lil leaves the bush landing on the Santa Tree.
9 AM For the past little while, Lil has been moving to a few different branches on the Santa tree.
9:04 AM Dad departs flying south circling around over Lil and flying over the gully. For a second we thought Big might be up there flying with him but it was a red-tailed hawk. This aggressive hawk pursued MrM. Although no contact was made that I could see, dad belted vocals and his talon's were out ready to physically defend if needed. The hawk realized its mistake and took off out of view.
Dad disappeared flying south.
9:28 AM As I was packing up my gear, Lil departed the Santa tree flying behind the nest site and out of view. I am not sure if he landed or continued flying out to the lake.
9:30 AM I leave with a sigh of joy as both fledglings are progressing beautifully; learning the ways of the wild ~ survival and freedom.
