I find Angela’s Christmas, a charming little children’s film on Netflix, to be surprisingly deep in the way that it maps onto many of the basic symbolic patterns and themes of the Christmas story itself. In this video essay / analysis, I dig into these patterns and their meaning -- which intertwine with the setting, characters, and light/dark imagery -- as well as commentary from the book’s author and the film’s director. I think it's much more than a story of a girl who steals a baby Jesus statue!
