Taking extremely rough walls from disaster to a level 5 finish using Durabond 90 and Fibafuse Wall Reinforcement.

After removing a ton of old tile from this century old apartment bathroom, we discovered that the walls underneath were made entirely of concrete and wire mesh (with a thin layer of plaster on top to make them smooth). Not the best considering the plan was to leave the walls ‘drywalled’.

There are a few options when it comes to taking rough/damaged/uneven walls to a smooth finish. You can remove all existing materials and take the wall back to the studs, then add new materials (gypsum/plaster board, sheetrock, drywall). You could also add new gypsum/plaster board/ sheetrock/drywall overtop of the old damaged walls. In this instance, taking the walls to the studs wouldn’t help due to the construction of the unit. Also, adding material on top of the damaged walls wasn’t an option because of size restrictions. This left only one solution: repairing the old walls and bring them to a level 5 finish using Setting compound, fiberglass reinforced tape, a vinyl corner bead from Trim-tex and a skimming blade!
