Despite initial resistance, his gentle approach wins some clan leaders over, but his health deteriorates from his efforts, leading to his departure. He informs Okonkwo that Nwoye, now Isaac, is attending a distant teaching college, causing Okonkwo to drive him away in anger. Okonkwo, dissatisfied with the changes, returns home to find Umuofia's traditional ways fading and mourns the loss of its former strength.
