The success and huge popularity of WCW Monday Nitro led to the creation of WCW Thunder, a new live wrestling show that would debut in 1998. Ted Turner wanted Thunder to air on the TBS Superstation while WCW Nitro would continue airing on TNT, showing the immense popularity of World Championship Wrestling at the time. WCW Executive Producer Eric Bischoff, however, did not want to create another live TV Show. It's been reported that the creation of Thunder was centered around Turner Broadcasting wanting to boost their weekend advertiser revenue with the male demographic, and TBS felt that a Thursday wrestling show was the way to do it.

At the time, nobody created more live wrestling than Eric Bischoff and WCW. With resources and storylines already stretched thin, Bischoff said that a second live TV show would dilute the current WCW product. Turner had already made up his mind though, and WCW Thunder would debut on TV much to the dismay of Eric Bischoff and quite a few main event superstars. This video looks at the creation of Thunder, the challenges WCW and Eric Bischoff faced when putting the show together, and we'll also look at the first episode of WCW Thunder.
