David Robert Jones ( London , January 8, 1947 - New York , January 10, 2016), 67 better known by his stage name David Bowie , 8 was a British singer-songwriter , actor , multi-instrumentalist and designer . A major figure in popular music for nearly five decades, Bowie is considered an innovator, particularly for his 1970s work and his distinctive voice , as well as the intellectual depth of his work.

Bowie achieved notoriety in July 1969, when his single " Space Oddity " reached the top 5 of the British singles chart . He re-emerged in 1972, in the midst of the glam rock era , with his extravagant and androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, thanks to his successful single " Starman " and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars .

In 1975, Bowie achieved his first number one hit in the United States, thanks to his successful single " Fame ", co-written with John Lennon , and his album Young Americans. The sound represented a radical change from the style that had made him famous in the United Kingdom. With the re-release of Space Oddity. All of these albums, known as the " Berlin Trilogy ", entered the British top 5 , as well as receiving critical acclaim.

After mixed commercial success in the late 1970s, he scored a number one hit in the United Kingdom with the single " Ashes to Ashes " and its corresponding album, Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) . He collaborated with Queen on the number one hit " Under Pressure " and, shortly after, achieved commercial success again with his 1983 album Let's Dance , from which the hit singles " Let's Dance ", " China Girl" were taken. » and « Modern Love ». Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bowie continued to experiment with different musical styles, including blue-eyed soul , industrial , adult contemporary , jungle and R&B . He has not toured since his 2003-2004 A Reality Tour and has not performed live since 2006. His most recent album Blackstar was released on January 8, 2016, two days before he died.
