Manuel González Rodríguez AKA ToteKing arrived at the top of Spain’s rap scene from an unlikely place. Born in Seville, Rodríguez grew up as a rock and heavy metal fan before discovering hip-hop and rap via a friend he played basketball with.

In this lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy presents Laboratorio La Havana 2019, ToteKing retraced his steps from the basketball courts of Seville, explaining the importance of both lyricism and heavy metal to his creative process as well as speaking frankly on the lessons of success, and how he manages growing old in a young person’s artform.

This discovery eventually led him into the then-burgeoning local scene. His career began as part of the group La Alta Escuela, whose lead MC Juaninacka Rodríguez credits as his primary inspiration.

Following the dissolution of La Alta Escuela in 2000, Rodríguez began a solo career as ToteKing that brought him to the top of the game and currently includes seven solo albums, as well as two in collaboration with his younger brother, Shotta. With an intricate style rooted in the deep lyricism he witnessed in his early years, ToteKing has secured his place in the annals of Spanish rap by staying rooted while not being afraid to navigate the ever-changing creative landscape of hip-hop.
