Ok here's the story on this one;

I used to live in Flagstaff Arizona and worked in a bar called "The Mad Italian". It was a popular dive joint owned by a mobster who routinely ripped off employees and paid people in drugs. Nights were packed with violent college kids, employees of the strip club across the street and transients from either the highway or surrounding cities. I ran the day shifts which were typically empty save the handful of alcoholic townies. This group was made up of mostly ex-mine workers, Native Americans or the random college drop out with a drinking problem.

One day a guy dressed in full biker gear strolled in all alone and ordered a beer. It was just me and him in there so I struck up casual conversation.

"Where you coming from?" I asked
"A funeral." he replied.
"Damn." I said. "No one close I hope."
"That's a long story." He answered.
"Welp, I ain't got much else other than time today." I said.

And so he proceeded to tell me the story of the Mad Trucker.
It has haunted me for years and so I had to make it into a song.

I can't say whether or not the actual tale was true, but how I came to hear is.
