Tarikh Episode 621

In This Episode Nikhil talks about Ajivika was an ancient Indian philosophical and ascetic movement that emerged in the 5th century BCE. Founded by Makkhali Gosala, a contemporary of Mahavira and Gautama Buddha, Ajivika sought to address fundamental questions about existence, destiny, and the nature of the self.
The central tenet of Ajivika was the concept of niyati, or destiny, which asserted that all events in the universe, including human actions, were predetermined and inevitable. This deterministic view set Ajivika apart from other contemporary philosophical schools like Jainism and Buddhism.
Ajivikas practiced a strict ascetic lifestyle, embracing a philosophy of detachment from worldly concerns. They believed in the transmigration of the soul and the cyclical nature of existence, emphasizing the impermanence of life and the inevitability of suffering.
Despite its prominence during its early years, Ajivika gradually declined and eventually disappeared. The movement's demise can be attributed to a combination of factors, including internal divisions and external competition from more influential philosophical traditions. While Ajivika itself is no longer actively practised, its historical significance lies in its contribution to the rich tapestry of ancient Indian philosophical thought.
