In this bug series I work out how to create a 3D relief to use under watercolor. I wanted to find a way to make the flat visual art I make, less flat. In this video in particular I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. I experiments with many different mediums including aquapasto and watercolor ground. I watch cake videos to figure out how to sculpt the watercolor ground as if it were plaster or clay (watercolor ground is much lighter.)

I wanted to create bug paintings that could be felt as well as seen. I was inspired by watching Molly Burke’s (a blind YouTuber and speaker) videos and wondering what I could do to make visual art more accessible to a blind audience. As a disabled person, I often miss out on normal life events because of lack of accommodations. So often, what I need to be able to enjoy something would be a simple solution but the accommodations just aren’t there because most people don’t need them. I see no reason for all of my art to be inaccessible to anyone so I decided to change the way I work. Often accommodations don’t only benefit those who they are essential for but they benefit everyone. I love how my bug paintings turned out in the end. Their 3D modeling makes them not only interesting to feel but also more interesting to look at.
