We were fortunate enough to catch up with Jake and Nic on a beautiful spring day in downtown Asheville, NC. The duo, who had been touring through the area, was down to film the recording as long as we found a floor that sounded great for dancing, a rare requirement but totally necessary. We reached out to American Vinyl Co and they were very kindly willing to host us! Jake explains the history behind this tune in the video. We had too much fun capturing the sound of Jake’s fiddle and Nic’s dancing in this space!

Jake Blount is an award-winning musician and scholar based in Providence, RI. A specialist in the early folk music of Black Americans, Blount is a skilled performer of spirituals, blues and string band repertoire. Blount has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Newport Folk Festival, and numerous other venues across and beyond the United States.

One of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) is swiftly becoming recognized as a singular voice in traditional dance. Informed by 25 years of ethnographic study and performance, Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog, flatfoot, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration.
