JR: Hi Faith! What’s on your mind today?

FP: Let’s continue our lesson on inflation – a common topic of conversation when we talk about the economy.

JR: In our last lesson, we learned that the noun form – inflation – is much more common than the verb form, inflate.

FP: But there’s more about inflation to explore. When we use inflation in the subject position of the sentence, we commonly use a few verbs in the predicate.

JR: When inflation goes up, we often use a small number of verbs - increase, rise, or soar.

FP: So, you might hear a person say:

“Inflation is increasing.”

“Inflation is increasing quickly.”

Or

“Inflation is rising.”

FP: On the other hand, when inflation is going down, we often use verbs such as decrease, drop, or decline.

So, you might hear a person say:

“Inflation is decreasing.”

“Inflation is dropping.”

Or

“Inflation is declining.”

JR: We can also use any of the verbs we have explored to ask questions about inflation. So, you might ask, “Why is inflation increasing?” “Why is inflation soaring?” or “Why is inflation dropping?”

FP: Let’s take some time to work with these ideas. Use the verb “rise” to ask about the reason for an increase in inflation.

Here is one possible answer:

“Why is inflation rising?”

JR: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV.
