Mali: Deadly Heatwave Makes Ice Costlier Than Bread and Milk | Firstpost America
In Mali and elsewhere in Africa’s Sahel region, residents find no respite from a lethal heatwave. It drove temperatures to a record high of 48.5 degrees Celsius in Mali’s south-western city of Kayes. Meanwhile, in the capital city of Bamako, it led to the deaths of 102 people within just the first four days of April. As Mali melts away, ice has become a hot commodity where rising demand and falling supply have pushed its prices higher by ten times. It now costs more than essential items like bread and milk. In the neighbouring countries of Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Niger and Chad, the most vulnerable population have fallen victim to the heatwave. Although the Sahel is accustomed to bouts of heat during this time of year, studies say human-induced climate change has exacerbated the situation.
