Piping Up! Organ Concerts at Temple Square | November 1, 2023 (Joseph Peeples)

“Toccata in A minor,” FbWV 101 – Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-67)
“Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele,” BWV 654 – J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
“Aria” – James Kasen (b. 1956)
“Tribute,” from the Suite for Organ – Clay Christiansen (b. 1949)

Johann Jakob Froberger is arguably the least well-known of the really significant 17th-century organist/composers in Europe. In addition to developing the Italian style of keyboard composition in Germany—inherited from his studies in Italy with Frescobaldi—Froberger developed the baroque keyboard dance suite into an artistically significant genre.

J. S. Bach wrote his organ prelude on the Lutheran chorale “Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele” BWV 654, as a musical illustration of the hymn’s exhortation to “adorn” ourselves with joy as we prepare to live again with God. This prelude comes from a collection of chorale preludes for organ known as the “Great 18” or the “Leipziger Choräle,” which Bach prepared in the 1740s.

James Kasen is an organist, composer, arranger, and choral conductor perhaps best known for his seven volumes of organ preludes that are predominantly based on hymn tunes. His “Aria” for organ, published in 2020, is newly-composed.

Clay Christiansen served as a Tabernacle Organist from 1982 until his retirement in 2018. He published his “Suite for Organ,” which opens with this fanfare-like “Tribute” the following year, in 2019.
