Mr Gay Texas Pageant, 1983

The Mr Gay Texas pageants were held from about 1974 until at least 1990, bringing together the best-looking guys from around the state. Candidates were sponsored by home-bars, and competed in casual wear, fantasy and a more bare round, and the judges were Texas state celebrities in their own way, including past winners. In the 1983 competition, sponsored by TWT magazine, a who’s who also helped out, with an introduction by Chuck Patrick (publisher of TWT), emcees were Tiffany Jones and CJ Harrington, performers were Hot Chocolate, Tasha Kohl and Lady Shawn. It was a long show , almost two hours, as there were 32 contestants.

Kenneth Long, the husband of the late Jay Allen gave me quite a few VHS tapes they had collected over the years, and I am very grateful to add them to the JD Doyle Archives. I call them my Jay Allen Collection. Jay was the owner of many of Houston’s prominent gay bars, like The Barn, The Galleon, Miss Kitty’s Dance Hall and Saloon, and Pacific Street, dating back to 1977. I have had them converted digitally and did slight editing (title cards, some captions, etc.) and am very pleased to share them.

Use of material on my channel is done under the "fair use" doctrine of the U.S. Copyright law, Section 107, number 1. Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered fair, such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair, such as: The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes. My uses are always for educational and history purposes.

And, despite the “fair use” area above, when you upload a video YouTube automatically checks for possible copyright infringement, and gives you the option, (not much of one) to just have them mute your video during that piece of a song. So, that will explain sound gaps in places…. Sorry.
