How did David Parkes develop an interest in the computer science subfield of economics?

David Parkes, Dean of Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, describes how his interest was seeded by conversations around economics at Oxford University. His later research with Professor Lyle Unger at University of Pennsylvania, using economics as a metaphor for programming distributed optimizing systems, focused this interest. When the internet was developed and the economy became digital, automated through computer science, he started to consider himself a computer scientist studying about problems in economics.
