Sometimes inexperienced Bald Eagles that have laid an egg(s) are not as careful as they should be - threatening the cracking / breaking of the egg. In that case, the egg(s) are removed from the nest and placed in an incubator to finish developing. In its place, a wooden egg is placed in the nest so the parent eagles will not realize anything has happened. After the egg hatches, the eaglet is placed into the nest of an established breeding pair who have a history of being successful in raising eaglets. Once again, the wooden egg is swapped out - but this time, the eaglet, along with its broken shell is then placed back into the nest so the adult eagles can raise it. Careful and constant monitoring is done until it is firmly established that all will be well in the nest.
