"Today we had closing arguments in this antitrust trial, that began three and a half years ago against Google and its search engine, alleging that it's been abusing its dominance to throttle competition and innovation, charges that Google has staunchly denied."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press, technology reporter:
"These closing arguments are the last chance for the Justice Department and the antitrust regulators there to present their side of the case. And using the evidence that was presented in last fall's trial, why the judge should rule that Google is running an illegal monopoly. And on the flip side, Google gets to present its side of the case, which the crux of it is the reason why we're successful is because we're the best at what we do. We have the best technology and people. There's a reason why Google is a verb. It's because people trust us and we are synonymous with search because we're so good at it."

"Then the judge is going to take it under submission. He will not rule today. We don't know when he will rule. There's no set timetable but the the general expectation it'll be several months. So we'll probably get a ruling either late summer, early autumn, and then if the ruling goes against Google and they're declared a monopoly, then we would move to another mini trial, what's known as the remedies phase and how to fix this monopoly, how to prevent this monopoly from continuing on. And that process could spill into next year. So it'll be a while still before we get resolution."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Liedtke, The Associated Press, technology reporter:
"Google's widely expected at their annual developer conference to announce that they're infusing more artificial intelligence into their search engine, which is going to change the nature of search. So, part of the problem of regulating tech is tech moves much faster than they can catch up to the problems that they see. So I mean, by the time this thing's resolved, search could be operating in a whole different manner anyway."

STORYLINE:
Google's preeminence as an internet search engine is an illegal monopoly propped up by more than $20 billion spent each year by the tech giant to lock out competition, Justice Department lawyers argued at the closings of a high-stakes antitrust lawsuit.

Google, on the other hand, maintains that its ubiquity flows from its excellence, and its ability to deliver results customers are looking for.

And Google has said that social media companies like Facebook and TikTok also present fierce competition.
