In this Jazz Drummer Q-Tip of the Week drum set lesson, I break down and demonstrate one of the hardest rhythmic concepts to learn and feel comfortable with, METRIC MODULATION. Metric modulation is considered one of the hardest rhythmic concepts to learn and feel comfortable with because it involves essentially playing in two different time signatures at the same time. When it is done well, it can create exciting moments of tension in different musical situations that can build to effective moments of group release. This concept is one of the hardest rhythmic concepts to learn and feel comfortable with but after watching this lesson, drummers will begin to feel more comfortable with the concept. I do not break down metric modulations involving 3 over 4 or odd grouping modulations involving 5 or 7.
