Masking is something that a lot of autistic people do, both consciously and unconsciously. We do it to code-switch, to blend in, to fly under the radar - to essentially appear less autistic.
But what does autistic masking feel like for someone with autism? And what toll does it take on our mental health and well-being? Why do we feel like we need to mask, and what would it take for us to not feel the need to mask?
As someone who was only diagnosed with autism when I was thirty, I have spent a huge chunk of my life masking to fit in. But it's come at a cost. Let's have a chat about masking, what it means, what it feels like, and why I want to stop.
