In today's video I'm going to talk about my favorite band of all time, Queen, and its lead singer, Freddy Mercury. Freddy was influenced heavily by classical music and borrowed harmonic ideas, concepts and progressions from it. In particular, I'm going to highlight one such motif that has been featured extensively in many of Queen's songs, but is rarely found in other songs (especially in the last few decades). I'll present a bit of theory and then present the idea, and then show some songs that use it. Finally I'll draw an interesting parallel to the classical music that might have influenced Mercury, and show one such example from the works of one of Beethoven's piano sonatas.
