The low voter turnout in the Meerut Lok Sabha seat has raised worries for the BJP. The party’s candidate from Meerut-Hapur seat Arun Govil, Lord Ram of the extremely popular television serial Ramayan is pitted against Samajwadi Party's Dalit candidate Sunita Verma and BSP’s upper caste candidate Devvrat Tyagi. What makes the contest riveting is SP’s PDA – Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak – strategy. The Yadav-dominated party has fielded a Dalit candidate and is hoping that the large Muslim population will stay by his party’s side. The BSP however can spoil the SP’s chances if the Dalit Jatav vote stays loyal to Mayawati.
