Karabo Mokoena Murder Suspect Described As 'Quiet' And 'Calm'

A friend of the man accused of killing his 22-year-old girlfriend and dumping her burnt body in Lyndhurst has described him as a quiet and calm man who loved working for God.
Sandile Mantsoe made an appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court for a bail application on Wednesday in connection with Karabo Mokoena’s murder.
A decision is expected to be delivered next month.
A friend and church mate of Mantsoe says she was shocked when she heard the news.
“I was shocked to hear the news, honestly speaking, and I’m still hurt. For me, I’m not saying what he did was right, it was totally wrong.”
She says they are choosing to remain confident.

“At this moment we’re still trying to put the families together, trying to facilitate that and have them meet and talk and let them vent.”
Final arguments are expected to be heard next month, however the media will only be able to cover the bail decision as per a court order.

KARABO WAS VULNERABLE

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women Susan Shabangu has moved to clarify a statement she made in a television interview following the murder of Karabo Mokoena.
The minister appeared on eNCA’s current affairs programme CheckPoint, which was looking at the murder of Mokoena.
In the interview, Shabangu said Mokoena was “weak” which led to her becoming a victim of abuse.
Her remarks sparked backlash on social media.
The Democratic Alliance called on Shabangu to retract her remark, saying that it was callous.

Addressing the media ahead of her budget vote in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, Shabangu explained what she meant.
“Karabo was vulnerable. Karabo was in a relationship which she thought would work for her, but it led to her unfortunate death. I think this talks to the bigger picture of how men behave towards women. And they believe they are masculine and they believe they have the right to assault women.”

UNACCEPTABLE SEXUAL ADVANCES

Shabangu said it’s unacceptable for leaders to make socially inappropriate sexual advances towards women.
She was responding to questions in Parliament over a storm that has erupted over sexually explicit text messages sent by her colleague in the Presidency Minister Jeff Radebe to a junior staffer.
“The issue of leaders who make sexual overtures is unacceptable. There’s no way in which we can allow that, and there’s no way that we can allow leaders to continue to undermine women. This is a matter that has to be looked at by the relevant structures which can then deal with it.”

Radebe has since apologised for his behaviour.
