The Franklin police department said that at the time there is no indication that Mandisa’s death was a result of suspicious or criminal activity, according to a post the department wrote on X, the app formerly known as Twitter.

“The Franklin Police Department sends its condolences to Hundley’s family, friends, and fans,” the department added on X.K-Love, a Christian music station, was the first to report on the artist’s death. Mandisa first rose to prominence after the artist stood her ground while being critiqued by “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell in season five of the show, K-Love reported. After she placed in the Top 10 on “American Idol,” she released her debut album “True Beauty,” in 2007.

Mandisa began her singing career as a member of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, an African American vocal group, while she attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn., K-Love reported. After her appearance on “American Idol,” she worked with several artists some of whom include, TobyMac, Matthew West, Michael W. Smith and Kirk Franklin.

Throughout her two-decade tenure as a singer, Mandisa released five full-length projects, including one Christmas LP, according to her website. Her hit album “Overcomer,” earned her a Grammy in 2014 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.

Mandisa has garnered strong relationships with her fellow artists such as TobyMac, K-Love reported.

“Since the first day I met Mandisa, she has been nothing but original and courageous,” Toby told K-Love. “My touring family is better when she is out with us. She genuinely supports each artist that takes the stage, as well as every crew member behind the stage. In a single word, I would say without hesitation that she is one of the most authentic people I have ever met. Her heart is to help others.”Known for her talent, but also for her smile and positive spirit Mandisa Hundley made a major difference in so many lives. But before the worldwide fame, her musical gifts started right here in Music City as a Fisk Jubilee Singer.

"We would have Bible study with rotel with the Krispy Kreme and we just try to discover who we are. What was our purpose and what God wanted us to do," College friend Freda Player said. For Mandisa the message from above was clear, she was going to be a singer. "Mandisa loved, loved her some Whitney Houston, so she would sing here in the benches and sing Whitney Houston and we’d be like sing Disa," Player said.

Freda Player, Mandisa's college friend said the entire campus would watch her, and fellow Fisk Jubilee Singers perform at the memorial chapel.
