EDIT: Reading the comments, I thought I should answer some of the questions and provide additional information to this video.

1. Yes, Darrell records the opening credits live most of the time. If he has a separate engagement, he prerecords it. They have a file saved at the beginning of each season, so in case he can’t make it, all he has to do is to record introducing the host and musical guest. He also has a recording studio within his apartment. As for the current season (season 46), he has prerecorded the cast list at the beginning of the season like mentioned before. All he has to do is send an audio file to NBC every week for the musical guest and host introductions, as well as the announcement for next week’s. That is why you do not hear any difference between shows during the cast announcements.

2. Because it is live, there has been times where he has mispronounced names or missed some entirely. In the live version of this episode, he accidentally pronounced John’s name as “John Mulvaney.” We all make mistakes.

3. Don Pardo was a fantastic announcer and his legacy continues to live on with Darrell’s voice. He and Steve Higgins worked to create a voice that works but also pays respect to Pardo. You can hear a little bit of Don in some vowels and phrases like “featuring...” and “musical guest...”

4. I do not know Darrell personally. These are all from interviews of him and his podcast, The Third Person Podcast with Chris Millhouse and Darrell Hammond. Please check it out and give him some love and support!
