Fitchburg native Brassard earns new martial arts honor

Fitchburg native Grandmaster Jim Brassard has seen his share of honors throughout his illustrious tenure in martial arts, and can now add another distinction to the lengthy and impressive list.

After Brassard received a sports award for martial arts in August of 2016 signed by President Barack Obama, Grandmaster Jim Thomas — host of the oldest martial arts hall of fame in the nation — contacted Brassard with some unexpected news.

Thomas informed Brassard that he was creating a new award in Brassard’s honor and would be presenting it to him, dubbed, the Presidentially Awarded Martial Arts Grand Master of the Year award.

Thomas is a living legend in the martial arts, even receiving a third-place trophy for forms and handshake from none other than Bruce Lee himself in the mid-1960s at a tournament in California.

Thomas officially presented Brassard with the award on March 18 in New York at an event Thomas said he hopes becomes an annual tradition. While in attendance, Brassard shared a table with Chuck Norris’ senior leader, Master Danny Lane, and several of Brassard’s students from across the country came to receive awards and to witness the event.

Brassard, a 1981 graduate of Fitchburg High School, has received many awards for his efforts over the past four decades, but this one has added significance.

Brassard’s mother, Jeannette Brassard who was formerly a nurse in Leominster, had died just a short time before the ceremony on Presidents Day.

The latest honor carried special significance and Brassard dedicated the award to his late mother.

When Brassard wrote to a friend about the date of his mother’s passing, the friend wrote back: “An honorable departure and a nod to her son. ”
