If you're curious about what max difficulty is, you first have to get the yellow hat which you get from beating the game a couple times. And then when you do have it while selecting a stage, hold the R3 button down and hold the joystick there too then when the game stops loading you should have max difficulty enabled after letting go of the joystick!
