āž”ļø I donā€™t ever think Iā€™ve seen a bass played like this - especially a Rickenbacker! Todayā€™s episode was a patron pick for ā€œThe Lungā€ by Dinosaur Jr. shot live at KEXP, and my ears are definitely ringing from the massive wash of overdriven riffs gelled together by bassist Lou Barlow and frontman J Mascis. As the song progressed, I loved peeling back the layers to unearth the nuances in their ā€œco-opā€ riff style, where itā€™s almost like two guitarists playing the same riff with slight variations. I discuss Louā€™s unorthodox ā€œstrummingā€ approach (strumming as high as fret 7), how he often keeps the bass lines on one string for a consistent tone, how capable he is of filling out the composition when the guitar drops out, and how his entire approach taps into a visceral experience while pummeling through a disarray of washy riffs. Truly interesting stuff - havenā€™t heard anything quite like it! šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ¤˜šŸ¼
