Alright so the final final episode of Attack on Titan began with a flashback to 2000 years ago, when Ymir was still just a slave for the eldian tribe. At that moment in time she had no titan powers and no hope of escape and there are two key reasons why this scene is important. Reason number 1 is that it gave us a rare insight into Ymir’s motivations, specifically her feelings about freedom itself. Earlier this season we know that initially she had a peaceful existence that was brutally taken away and ever since then she’s had no control over her own life. However as she stares at the pigs in this scene, we see her come to the realisation that although she can’t attain freedom for herself, in this specific moment she at least had the power to grant freedom to something else. Despite the obvious risk involved, Ymir freed these pigs simply because she had the chance to and that’s why it’s so interesting that when she had the chance to be free in this moment and in this moment, on both occasions she chose to remain as a slave. This leads us to the all-important question, why is it that someone who clearly values freedom would willingly deny that same freedom for herself? Zeke theorised that it’s because there’s something Ymir couldn’t let go of and Eren confirmed that it was the love she had for King Fritz.
