A look at the work QMDC's Conservation Detector Dogs 'Sophie' and 'Rocky' have done with their handlers, our pest technical officers - Dr Dave Berman and Tom Garrett - to protect native animals like the bilby from predation by pest animals. Our dogs are trained solely to detect the scent of feral cats, rabbits and wild dogs. Their job is to locate their whereabouts (which they do with a "sit") and their density on the landscape. Wearing GPS collars, their movements and the number of targets can be recorded. This enables our officers to apply the most appropriate control method. It's a blend of the oldest and latest technologies in what Dr Berman describes as "good science".
