The mysterious knobs are observed at many ancient megalithic sites across the globe, in the Mediterranean area, Egypt, India, China and Peru. Some of the most famous archeological sites include: the polygonal walls at Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Sacsayhuaman, Machu Picchu, the Menkaure pyramid at the Giza plateau, the Osireion at Abydos, Egypt, and Yangshan quarry in China.

What are these strange knobs? Why did ancient masons remove all this stone just to create these knobs? What was their function? Why do they show up at sites with high precision joints? Why would someone create these intricately interlocking stone blocks with super accurate joints but carve out irregular knobs? These questions have puzzled scientists and have been the focus of speculation and debate.

In a 2020 video, I explained my theory on what the knobs might be at Sacsayhuaman and how these giant polygonal walls were built.    • Explained: How were Peru’s Sacsayhuam...

To clarify, I think the knobs at different megalithic sites are neither created the same way nor serve the same function. I categorized these knobs to at least four types associated with their specific construction methods. For instance, the rectangular knobs at Greek and Roman temples are different from the random shaped knobs of Peru. These Peruvian knobs, however, might have been produced the same way as certain Egyptian ones. Even knobs at the same site, say Machu Picchu, were not created for the same purpose. Therefore, we cannot generalize and put all the so-called knobs in one pot and regard them equally.
