July 30 2023, 1:34 pm - I think this is Dad Rey who brings what looks like part of a flounder to Lof at the Surrey Reserve bald eagle cam nest in British Columbia. Lof is almost 13 weeks old, likely female, and not flying yet, though she's getting close with hovering and a bit of branching. So - does Lof say "thank you"? - no - she grabs Dad's foot with her beak! Once he gets his foot loose (eagles must have tough feet!), he feeds Lof briefly, while Lof demonstrates that young eagles can continue screeping at almost full voice while gulping down large bites of food. Rey steps away, leaving the fish with Lof who is perfectly capable of self-feeding, and grabs a tiny scrap of food from the nest - and Lof abandons the large chunk of fish to go after Rey and his little bit of food. Lof was doing a good job of looking huge and intimidating, and lunged at Rey after grabbing the bit of food. Rey wisely flew off. Lof does seem rather ungrateful in human terms, but she's practicing the skills she'll need in a few weeks when she sets out to explore the world - and part of Rey's job as a parent is to provoke this response, then get out of the way fast, before he actually gets hurt. As some of you know, Rey and his mate Brit are young adults, and this is the first time they've raised chicks - and even after years of watching eagle cams, I am still in awe at the amazing instincts eagles have. The video starts with the view from the South/side-view cam, and repeats the action from the North/overhead cam. You can watch them live at https://hancockwildlife.org/surrey-re... ~JudyB
