Street busking is a fab part of any city's fabric. While these sidewalk talent shows typically aren’t anything profound, there’s always the chance an upstart performer will catch your ear and slow your busy gait. Victor Ray has made quite the name as one of the form’s platonic ideals. “I sing in central London every week,” reads the bio description for his YouTube channel. It’s the place where his near 200k subscribers tune in for commute-stopping covers of Adele, Hozier, and Joji. A recent video of him and Teddy Swims preaching Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” at Piccadilly Square earned more than three million views. Speaking of numbers, his digital audience is as rapt as those in the real world. Last year’s ‘I felt.’ made a remarkable impact on the poppy side of the R&B scene, buoyed by the mid-tempo waltz “Stay For A While.” When “Comfortable” dropped at the top of 2024, it cemented him as a valuable new name. He calls it a warning against being complacent in a “toxic environment.” We invited him into our studio to spread the message. It’s not Piccadilly Square, but we think our setup is pretty nice.
