Abrams reflects on the Star Wars sequel trilogy and whether it would have been better to have a three-movie plan, or if he enjoyed the creative freedom that the hand-off between him and Rian Johnson resulted in. The filmmaker pulls from his extensive experience in television to discuss how story ideas shifted over time, and gives examples of when having a plan was beneficial and when it negatively impacted the story, before ultimately explaining how he’s learned “sometimes the hard way” that having a plan and being willing or able to shift it is the most critical thing.
