Physician, best-selling author and renowned speaker, Dr. Gabor Maté shares his experience drinking ayahuasca and receiving healing from the Shipibo Onanya at the Temple of the Way of Light in June 2019.

After working with ayahuasca over the last decade, this was Gabor’s first time drinking ayahuasca in the Amazon with the Shipibo. He came to the Temple to co-lead a retreat specifically held for western medical professionals and together, they took a deep dive into traditional Amazonian healing. They experienced the spiritual technologies, sacred science, and healing traditions of the Amazon first hand, and left the Temple with a newfound appreciation for the depth, sophistication, and mastery of Shipibo healers.

Underpinning the Temple’s work is our vision for the incredible mastery of Shipibo healers to be respected, legitimized and honored in the modern world. We aim to cultivate a rich understanding in the West of the Shipibo system of shamanic healthcare and substantiate the efficacy of their ethno-medical traditions.

Indigenous healers have a system of sacred science that has evolved over hundreds coming from a profound relationship with and use of hundreds of medicinal plants and trees. In the Shipibo tradition, it takes typically ten years to become a fully "qualified" and authorized healer, after an arduous and highly challenging apprenticeship that could be considered a parallel to Western medical school in terms of the level of commitment, energy and time that is required to complete the education.

Shipibo healers are able to take ayahuasca healing to an incredibly deep level, reaching to the roots of trauma, pain and discomfort. This level of healing is not possible when drinking ayahuasca alone and without the vast array of plant spirit medicines, energetic surgical procedures, protections and overall shamanic mastery of a trained healer.
