The blue glaze is the final color glaze in the underpainting. This layer is what gives you the optical greys that make this technique so effective. These beautiful hues are the perfect underpainting for the colors you will glaze over it. Once you’ve applied the blue glaze you have a final layer of white either egg tempera or casein, whichever you are using, to complete the underpainting. Then you are finally ready for color.
