During Okonkwo's first year in exile, he plans a grand return to Umuofia, determined to compensate for what he considers wasted time. He intends to build a bigger compound and add huts for new wives. However, his plans are disrupted when Nwoye joins the Christians. Despite his initial disappointment, Okonkwo remains confident in his other sons and takes pride in his daughters, particularly Ezinma, who has grown into a beautiful and healthy young woman. Upon his return to Umuofia, Okonkwo finds the village greatly changed, with many converts to Christianity and the white men establishing a government and court system. Despite Okonkwo's desire for violence against the white intruders, his friend Obierika explains that fear of reprisal and internal divisions prevent such actions. Obierika reflects on the white men's strategy of quietly imposing their religion and governance without regard for the local customs or language.
