BIS Standards Clubs Mentors Training Programme

Bengaluru branch of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), The National Standards body of India (under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Govt of India) is organising a two-day Residential Mentors Training Programme for the teacher mentors of BIS Standards Clubs at RG Royal Hotel, Yesvanthpur on 18th and 19th of April 2024.

65 mentors of Standards club of schools and colleges from various districts of Karnataka attended the programme. The objective of this programme is to train the teacher mentors in various BIS related activities to be conducted in their institutions, like standards writing, slogan, drawing, quiz competitions and taking student members for exposure visits to manufacturing and testing organisations, research projects, educational outreach program, learning via standards, Quality Connect Campaigns, organising various programs and celebrations.

Shri. USP Yadav, Scientist-G and Deputy Director General (South), BIS graced the programme by his presence and elucidated the prevalence of standards in all walks of life and how absence of standards affect life and property. He motivated the participants to be interactive and grab as much information they can from the experienced faculty. In his appeal to public, he emphasised on purchase of only BIS certified products, as cost of sub-standard products may incur more losses rather than savings for the consumer.

Shri U T Vijay, Executive Secretary, Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology graced the event as Guest of Honour and motivated the gathering by explaining about the various schemes by the Karnataka government on the grounds of Cyber security, Defence sector, water management etc. He explained about the 49 years of contribution of KSCST in the state for coordinating about 60,000 research projects, more than a thousand of which has been commercially successful and many of them have been patented.

Shri Vijayaveeran K, Director and Head, Bangalore Branch Office welcomed the delegates and explained the significance of standards in attaining the UN sustainable development goals. He also informed that the Standards Clubs initiative by Shri. Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of BIS, is a huge success with 10,000 standards clubs all over the country and this education outreach by BIS is appreciated in international forums like ISO Council meetings.

Ms. Nagamani T, Director and Head Bangalore Branch Laboratory presented Special address and explained the importance of Exposure visits for the Student members of the Standards Club. She also mentioned that Bangalore Branch Laboratory opens its doors for the exposure visits and allow the student members to gain a good knowledge about the testing and Conformity Assessment
