Susanna de Chenonceau, M. Ed. (formerly Susanna R. Cerasuolo, M.Ed.) gives tips about applying to a college honors program:

-If you were a strong student in high school and like an extra challenge, apply!
-If you struggled in high school, don't do it right away but consider applying after attending for a few semesters
-In the honors program, you are in smaller classes, have close relationships with your professors, complete a senior thesis, have more opportunities for awards, and register for classes early
